Dear Teri,

Thank you for your note. Our children are faced with growing up in possibly the most wicked environment this world has ever know. The Lord has anticipated this eventuality has has cleared the obstacles. You are in the unique position of holding your so to you through your covenants. That bond that tethers him to you will eventually draw him back. The best things you can do are 1) assemble your team (bishop, people who are influential in the boy's life, therapist, if necessary); 2) increase your level of sanctification so that you can better partner with the Lord; 3) maintain the relationship with your son at all costs. Time is on your side. Waywardness is typically seasonal.
Blessings,
Larry

A friend sent this article to me knowing the struggles I'm having with my 16 year old son. He had no idea how comforting your words would be to me. Having been on both sides of the wayward soul, being one in my younger years & trying to save one now, your insight fills me with hope and assurance that my son will be fine and I will be with him forever, regardless of his choices here. Thank you for sharing your gift. You have blessed my life with it.

Dear Cathy,
If there is one thing that God has lots of it is time. He is in the business of redeeming his children, not cursing them and casting them away. If we believe that he level of compassion and mercy is perfect then we must also believe that he can rescue a soul, who has removed himself from God to an incredible distance. I'm sorry that you have to endure in patience, but your effort is akin to a sacrifice, and as we know, sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven. Hang onto your covenants and your faith in God and you will see your efforts rewarded.

Blessings,

Larry

Thank you, Brother Barkdull. This is the most profound and comforting explanation I have ever received. I am too often a doubter, of myself, my efforts, and Christ's promises. This article has crystallized for me what I must do, for husband and for children.
My husband was raised Baptist, joined the Church after we started dating. We were married in the temple, so our children are covenant children. My husband was a Bishop after being in the Church for 25 years, but let his long-harbored doubts about Joseph Smith bloom into a crisis, and has returned to the Baptist church. He is very close to excommunication. Two of our 3 children are inactive. This explanation will be my touchstone from now until they are redeemed. Thank you, thank you.
Sincerely, Sister Cathy Marler
